More of the Same

I usually just skip columns written by Eleanor Clift; there is little point in reading them since the headlines frequently are enough to know everything that she has to say.  Clift is the high priestess of the obvious liberal position.  To put it bluntly, she never met an Obama talking point that she did not like.  Even so, I was fascinated to read her latest effort at the Daily Beast which discusses strategies to be followed in the State of the Union address.  The column contains all the stuff one would expect:
1) the upcoming sequester will be "crippling" since it will end the recovery, put a million people out of work, throw children off of Head Start and end cancer research, at a minimum.
2) the Republicans are not willing to cooperate with Obama since they have been insulted by his innaugural address.
3) if Obama talks "seriously" about slowing the growth of entitlements, the GOP will be satisfied and it will agree to raise further revenue by limiting deductions.
4) gun safety and immigration reform will get top billing in the SOTU; Obama will get "victories" on both issues.

What was unusual, I thought, about the Clift column is that she discusses at length the outlook of one Republican who says that it is unlikely that Obama will get any further revenue from the GOP.  Clift then explains how the public will blame the Republicans for being uncooperative and preventing a deal, but, at least, Clift's column makes clear that the liberal echo machine in the press is starting to realize that with sequestration, things have changed.  They cannot just wait for the GOP to fold under pressure; this time the pressure is actually on Obama and the Obamacrats.  The more people like Clift call the sequester "crippling", the greater the pressure will become on Obama to find a way to avoid it.  Time is on the side of the Republicans.  All that Obama has is Newsweek, and Newsweek doesn"t even exist anymore.
