Earlier this past week, the news came out that a federal grand jury in Miami is investigating New Jersey Democrat Robert Menendez. The investigation centers on allegations that Menendez used his office to run interference for a big contributor who had problems with the IRS, that Menendez helped the same big bucks donor to win a contract for port services worth hundred of millions of dollars and that Menedez frequented underage prostitutes at the vacation villa of the same contributor. The allegations are not new; I have written about them previously. I have also written about Menendez' response, namely that these charges are all a "smear" by a "right wing" website.
Let's be clear now. The grand jury has been empaneled by the U.S.Attorney in southern Florida. This is a person who was appointed by president Obama and who works directly for Attorney General Eric Holder. There is no chance whatsoever that the grand jury is part of any right wing scheme. It is possible that the U.S.Attorney could have run an investigation of Menendez in response to the allegations, but if no proof of wrongdoing were found, we would have heard an announcement that the investigation was closed. Instead, we hear there is a grand jury. In simple English, that means that the investigation turned up evidence that the prosecutors think is sufficient for an indictment. Putting it in even simpler terms, Menendez is in deep doo doo.
Earlier this year, I predicted that Menendez would be gone in a month. My timing was a bit off, but I still predict that Menendez will be gone soon. I just do not believe that he will be so brazen as to stay in office once indicted. Of course, he is from New Jersey, so one never knows.
