The North Koreans have announced the end of the Armistice Agreement that ended the active fighting in the Korean War. From a legal standpoint, that means that North Korea now considers itself actively at war with both South Korea and the United Nations (read United States). Most of the articles I have read about this action by the NK's treat it as if it is some sort of stunt. You know, the crazy boy dictator is shouting threats but will not do anything about it. Indeed, every article points out that the NK's will not have the technology for "years" to mount a nuclear warhead on a missile and aim it accurately. What a relief! At least, that is what we are supposed to believe.
But let's look at the other side of the story. Let's assume for a moment that Kim Jung Un and his minions are not just throwing a temper tantrum. Let's assume that they really are serious about being back at war with both South Korea and the USA. North Korea has a formidable armed force that has nuclear weapons. It does not need missiles to deliver these bombs. It also may just be insane enough in its beliefs that it thinks that it needs to start a nuclear exchange with both South Korea and the USA.
My point is not that I expect this to happen. I don't. I do know, however, that we cannot afford to treat this as a joke. There are too many lives at stake.
