Hoax or Not? Is Assad Dead?

Reports or rumors (depending on your point of view) are circulating across the internet announcing that Syrian dictator Bashir al Assad was shot by his bodyguard and is either clinging to life in a Damascus hospital or already dead (take your pick).  The bodyguard who supposedly shot Assad is an Iranian sent by Teheran to help keep Assad safe.

There is no way yet to verify if any or all of this is true.  If Assad is dead, the world will be a better place for it.  This is a man who sent 75000 of his countryment to their deaths just so that he could try to hold onto power.  If Assad was killed by an Iranian, that too would be good news since it would sour the remaining Assad forces on the Iranians.  There is no way that the rebels are going to ally with Iran, so Iran would lose influence completely in Syria no matter what happens next.  Since Hezbollah has been involved in Syria as part of the Iranian support for Assad, the shooting of Assad by an Iranian would sour Syrian/Hezbollah relations as well.

My guess is that this entire story is bogus.  Still, the day is coming soon when the news of Assad's death will be true.  This is not a guy who can come to a good end.
