The Media's Big Gift to Donald Trump

For close to a year, the media has been Donald Trump's biggest ally.  He gets them ratings and they give him free air time.  It's how Trump has managed to lead the GOP race while spending very little on advertising.  Throughout that time, the media's pundits have periodically declared Trump's candidacy dead or dying after some statement or event.  "Trump called some Mexicans rapists."  "Trump said that John McCain is not a hero."  "Trump attacked Megyn Kelly."  "Trump was nasty."  "Trump called George Bush a liar."  The list goes on.  Each time we were assured that Trump had really stepped in it this time; his support would soon disappear.  To be fair, I thought the attacks on John McCain and George Bush were outrageous and would hurt Trump, but I was wrong.  These efforts by the media to destroy Trump all failed.

Now we have the latest attack.  "Trump promotes violence at his rallies!"  That's today's attack line from the media, and it is being poured on by essentially every pundit one can find.  The problem, however, is that this attack will only help Trump.  People can see how this is a phony attack.  The other night in Chicago, Trump said nothing.  No, it was protesters shouting support for Bernie Sanders who stopped the rally.  According to reports, the protests were organized by Moveon.org which is largely funded by George Soros.  Now think about the impact that this has.  There are millions of people across the USA who are angry.  Many feel that they are being threatened by waves of illegal immigrants who come here and drive down wages.  They feel that the basic tenets of this country are being overturned.  And the media is now showing them that people from the very groups they fear are now trying to keep them from attending rallies in a presidential campaign to hear from the candidate who seems to be speaking for them.  It's hard to think of a better way to energize all of those people to vote.  And when they do, it will be to vote for Trump.

On top of the added support for Trump, there is also the inevitable backlash against those who the protesters support.  If they look violent, then most Americans won't want to support the group fomenting the violence.

I actually wonder if the Chicago protest was really a dirty trick from the Clinton campaign.  After all, why would a group go to disrupt a political rally and shout slogans for Bernie Sanders if they truly supported him?  They would have to know that it would make Sanders look bad.  It reminds me of a trick used by Donald Segretti for Richard Nixon in 1968.  He hired people to go to rallies for one Democrat and then to disrupt those rallies while holding signs for another Democrat.  The idea was to cause a big rift between the supporters of the various Democrats that could not be healed by election day.  It's sort of the lowest possible political tactic, and it hasn't been used since Watergate as far as we know.  The Clintons, however, are just the sort to bring it back.
