There's supposed to be a boom in support for Pete Buttigieg among Democrats, but the polling doesn't really show it. The latest poll is from Morning Consult and Politico. It has Biden far out front with Sanders second. Warren is third. Harris and Buttihgieg are tied for fourth with 7% support. Some people say that 7% support for a mayor of a small city in Indiana shows that Mayor Pete (as he calls himself) is a true draw for Democrat primary voters. But the poll shows more. The voters supporting each of the top five candidates were asked to identify who they would support if their candidate dropped out of the race. All of these voters named Biden, Sanders, Warren and Harris as the top three second choice candidates. Mayor Pete didn't make the top three among second choices in any group. That means that his 7% is his whole support group; there's not more people lurking under the surface to step forward and surge his numbers.
It's way early, of course, and Mayor Pete is not all that well known. Still, it doesn't seem as if his candidacy is catching fire. It's smoldering, but we have a long way to go before there's any flame there.
