Reality -- The Tweet of the Day

Much of what gets said on Twitter is not worth reading, but there are nuggets of reality that need to be repeated.  Today, in one of his tweets, President Trump said this:

The Democrats are doing nothing on the Border to address the Humanitarian and National Security Crisis! Could be fixed so easily if they would vote with Republicans to fix the loopholes.

There are so many simple things that could be done but aren't happening because Congress won't address the situation.  For example, the entire detention problem could be solved if Congress would simply pass a measure to treat people from Central America and the rest of the world exactly the way that those from Mexico are already treated.  If a Mexican is apprehended illegally crossing the border, he or she can be immediately removed from our country and returned to Mexico.  That can't be done to a person from Guatemala or Nicaragua or any other country besides Mexico.  This applies only to those caught crossing at the border.  It has no effect on those who are already in the country; those people keep their right to an immigration hearing before a judge.  Just making this change would reduce by tens of thousands the number of illegals detained by the federal government each month.

A second simple measure would require those seeking asylum make the request either at a US diplomatic office (like an embassy or consulate) or at a port of entry on the border.  Asylum requests made after illegal entry into the country would not be allowed.  This change would greatly reduce the number of people crossing the border illegally who then use a request for asylum to game the system and guarantee that they can stay in the USA.  They get hearing dates nine or ten months later and never show up.

These are two simple changes which would not affect the rights of anyone now in the country illegally or legally.  The Democrats could support these changes without undermining any of their stated positions.  They won't even discuss these changes, however, because making them would give a "victory" to President Trump.  They seem not to care that these changes would give a much bigger victory to the people of the USA and our overtaxed border patrol.
