So the Republicans have declared war on women. The GOP wants to ban the use of contraceptives. Republican candidates want to force poor women in law school to pay for their own contraceptives. In the last two weeks, it seems as if this is all we have heard. Obama and the Obamacrats have pounced so hard on this issue, it seemed to be all consuming. Here, after all, was the issue to guarantee the re-election of Obama.
The NY Times/CBS poll, however, gives us the first picture of the reaction in the country to the battle over the government forcing employers, including religious institutions, to cover birth control and abortion pills in their health plans even if the employer has a moral objection to such services. here are the numbers:
Should employers have to include contraceptives and abortion pills in the health plans offered to employees if the employer has a moral or religious objection to such plan? By margin of 51% to 40% Americans say no. When the question is limited to whether or not religiously affiliated employers like Catholic hospitals or schools should have to include contraceptives and abortion pills in the health plans offered to employees despite the moral and religious objections to such health services, the American people reject the mandate on religious institutions by a margin of 57% to 36%.
These are staggeringly bad numbers for Obama and the Obamacrats. The fight about contraception arose because Obama ordered religous institutions to furnish free contraceptives and abortion pills as part of their health plans. Now, after all the brouhaha claiming any objection to this was an attack on women, we find that by better than 3 to 2, the American people reject Obama's position. Indeed, this may well be the reason why Obama's poll numbers have tanked in the last two weeks.
It always pleases me when reality intrudes on the closed world of the liberal bubble in DC, New York and LA. Just imagine how shocked the liberal elites must be to learn that the American people understand and value religious freedom. Soon, we will see the articles about how the GOP is fooling women to vote against their own interests.
