The figures for February are in, and they were just what was expected. That is a good sign for the economy, although it is troubling that once again the official government figures and the Gallup figures are diverging rapidly. At some point in the next few months, Gallup and the government will have to move closer (assuming that no one is cooking the books). It is worrisome that we may find in a few months that unemployment is moving higher again. Despite this nagging doubt, today's figures have to be celebrated as showing that the economy is resilliant and that growth, at least in employment, seems pretty steady.
