Imagine if we had not helped to oust Gaddafi

Last year, America and NATO helped prevent the massacre of thousands of Libyans in Benghazi; indeed, it was that action which began Western involvement in the ouster of Gaddafi. The forces of the crazy colonel were massed outside the city and the Libyan air force was bombing civilian areas regularly. American planes swept in from the sea, clearer the skies of the Gaddafi air force and broke the siege of Benghazi. Yesterday, just a year later, the Libyans repaid the favor by storming the US embassy and killing four Americans including our ambassador to that country.

Libya is the place where president Obama famously was described as leading from behind. Once the initial attack took place, America stopped participating in the air assault on Gaddafi and let the Europeans handle it. America and Obama had little to do with Libya after that. One reason for that strategy we were told by Obama's spokesmen and the liberal press was to keep us out of the limelight in Libya; it would prevent us from being the focal point of future attacks. To say the least, Obama's strategy was a total failure.

Now we are being told by the mobs in Cairo, Benghazi and Yemen that the fact that the attacks were on September 11th in all three cities was just a coincidence and that the reason for the attacks was a video privately produced by some Egyptian Christians in the USA. We are supposed to believe that the raising of a variant of al Qaeda's flag over the US embassy in Cairo and the crowds waiving the same flag in Yemen and Libya were mere coincidences. In fact, the use of rocket propelled grenades and fire bombs as well as mortars in Libya was just an expression of upset by the crowds over the videos.

The crazy thing is not that the liberal media has bought this excuse. I am sure that the terrorists who coordinated these attacks knew that the media would love to criticize America for permitting anyone to make a video that denigrates Islam. No, the crazy thing is that Obama and his administration are accepting this excuse. Indeed, the initial response from team Obama was to apologize for allowing the video to be made. Expressions of outrage were kept on hold until Mitt Romney issued a statement expressing outrage and taking Obama to task for the apology. Suddenly, since it might affect the election, Obama got involved and the USA is now officially outraged. Of course, even in that statement, Obama deplored the idea that anyone in America would express his views of another's religion. (I guess that all those anti-Mormon whispers coming from team Obama are only okay because Romney is a Mormon rather than a Moslem.)

Yesterday is a preview of what another four years of Obama at the helm of the nation would be like. For those who may have forgotten, when George Bush was president, America was respected around the world. Sure, we had many enemies, but we still have those enemies today. Obama, however, has made clear to our foes that soft attacks on America and Americans will be tolerated. The terror groups know that so long as they couch their violence in terms of offense to Islam, they can do just about anything without any consequences. Indeed, maybe Obama will offer them aid as a result.

I have to wonder what Obama would have done in response to 9-11. Would he have apologized to al Qaeda and begun an "outreach" program?
