The Democrats and Israel

In the last week, president Obama has had his spokesman tells America how close the USA is with Israel. Obama wants Americans to ignore the realities of his first term. Now comes the Democrat platform with some major changes on Israel that show Obama for who he really is.

First, in 2008, the Democrat platform said that Jerusalem was and is the capital of Israel. In 2012, the Democrats took that language out.

Second, in 2008, the platform demanded the isolation of Hamas until that organization renounces terrorism and accepts other requirements of the peace process. In 2012, all language denouncing this terrorist group has been deleted.

Third, in 2008, the Democrats insisted that any settlement of the so-called "refugees" question in a final settlement make a future Palestinian state, not Israel, the destination for Palestinian "refugees". In 2012, that language is gone.

Fourth, in 2008, the Democrats noted that it's not realistic to expect the outcome of negotiations to be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949. President Obama renounced that view when he called for a return to these lines as a starting point for negotiations. The 2012 platform has removed this language as well.

What all of this means is that the Democrats have pulled back from support for Israel. Anyone who supports Israel's right to exist in peace cannot be happy to see this withdrawal of support by the Democrats. The platform language change is more than just a few words. The Democrats are making clear that they pose a danger to the continued existence of the state of Israel, our closest ally in that part of the world.
