Why Do so Many Democrats hate Religion?

After yesterday's spectacle of Democrats voting three times against putting a reference to God in their platform and then booing when the convention chair announced that the platform would be changed anyway, I got to wondering how it could be that the core of an American political party could be so vehemently against such a change. After all, America has been a very religious society for more than two centuries. Weekly attendance at churches and synagogues is much greater here than in the rest of the world. We have national days of prayer, prayers at the beginning of Congressional sessions, and all sorts of thanksgiving to the Lord for the bounty we have received as Americans. Even the Democrat convention began and will end with a prayer to God. Why then would a motion to restore a reference to a person's "God-given" potential create such opposition?

I can only come up with one answer: the core of the party, those folks who really set the tone and agenda for the Democrats, worship at the altar of government, not that of God. Many of the interest groups key to the Democrats are opposed to religion. Think for example of gays. It seems that this group strongly favors the Democrats. Given the proscription against homosexuality in all of the major religions, it is easy to understand why this is. Think of the pro-abortion movement. Again, most religions hold human life sacred; it is a belief that strongly pushes towards limitations on or prohibition of abortion. Think of the college professors. These folks believe in and teach moral relativity. No civilization or belief system is better than another; they are just different. The idea of divine rules of behavior, no matter what they are, is antithetical to moral relativity. There cannot be good and evil; there can only be different belief systems for these folks.

On the other hand, there are minority voters for whom religion is important. That is why there were at least some Democrats supporting the restoration of God to their platform. There just were not enough of these folks to outshout the opponents, no matter what the convention chair ruled.

According to national polls, over 85% of Americans believe in God. Too bad the core of the Democrat party does not.
