A Mass Delusion, But for Whom?

With the end of 2013 and the start of the new year, there are myriads of columns in the media discussing the likely course of events unfolding over the next twelve months.  This year, the opinion pieces are striking.  It seems as if the pundits are living in two different worlds.  The liberals write about how the Republicans are now boxed in because Obamacare has gone into effect and millions have gotten "benefits".  The conservatives write about how the Democrats are going to pay an enormous price in 2014 and for years thereafter because of the fiasco that is Obamacare.  There seems to be no middle ground; either Obamacare is death for the Republicans or the Democrats.

Anyone who reads this blog knows what I think of Obamacare; it is an abomination, a willful destruction of the American healthcare system which provides little in the way of benefits to anyone.  To me, it is inconceivable that Obamacare hurt the Republican cause in 2014 unless the GOP intentionally shoots itself in the foot (something not beyond the realm of possibility).  It amazes me to read pieces by the liberals in the mainstream media which actually claim that with the arrival of January 1, any effort by Republicans to overturn Obamacare is now over.

Clearly, one side or the other is delusional.  Both cannot be correct.  Either Obamacare will drive the middle class into the arms of the Republicans or it will cement the Democrats coalition for decades to come, but not both.  The strange thing is that the pundits are not talking about a pivot away from the subject; both sides are truly aiming to capitalize on the magic of Obamacare.

To me, this indicates that 2014 is likely to a another wave election.  Unless things change in drastic fashion prior to November, the election will be fought on the battlefield of Obamacare.  The public will choose the future of that program on election day.  Most likely, that choice will be a decisive one.  At least at that point, we will learn for certain which side of the argument is delusional.
