Sometimes Reality Has to Be Considered

I got one of those delusional emails this afternoon from a group called the Tea Party Express.  Without going into too much detail, let me just say that the point of the email was to try to interest me in supporting the senate campaign by Joe Miller in Alaska.  Remember Joe Miller?  He is the tea party candidate who won the Republican primary last election in Alaska.  He beat Lisa Murkowski in that primary in a real shocker.  Then senator Murkowski ran as an independent in the general election and soundly trounced both Miller and the Democrat.

It is hard to believe that Miller would run for the senate again after losing so badly last time.  Remember, the current senator Mark Begich is one of the most endangered of the Democrats up for election in 2014.  For the GOP to have any chance of taking control of the senate, the Begich seat has to flip to the Republicans.  Miller as the Republican candidate is one of the only ways imaginable for the GOP to help keep Begich in office.

I understand why some of the Tea Party groups want to get strong conservatives into office.  I sympathize with their goals.  Nevertheless, if my choice is a weak conservative or a total liberal like Begich, there is no question which one would be preferable.  As a result, I think that efforts to get behind clearly flawed candidates like Joe Miller are at best self-defeating and, at worst, psychotic.  The future of America is too important for Tea Party groups like Tea Party Express to engage in detours like supporting Miller.
