The other day, I commented on the lack of notice across the world of the intentional starvation by Assad forces in Syria of the Palestinian refugee camp at Yarmouk (near Damascus). The tens of thousands of people in that camp have been cut off from food, water and medical supplies simply for the "crime" of being Sunni Moslems who are suspected of siding with the rebels in the Syrian civil war. On the same day that the nations of the European Union took concerted diplomatic efforts to protest the construction of apartments by Israel in Jerusalem, it capital, as a supposed "affront" to peace efforts, it was reported that dozens had starved to death at Yarmouk, but the Europeans were silent. Now the media is finally starting to wake up to this story.
In today's New York Post, there is an editorial about the silence of the United Nations to this war crime by Assad directed at non-combatant Palestinians. The editorial is well worth reading here.
I also think that it is worth noting that our own government did back flips when the Syrians used chemical weapons, but now seems indifferent to intentional starvation of civilians being used as a weapon. Is it too much to ask that president Obama stop talking about the income inequality created by his actions and issue a condemnation of these heinous actions? I know that the Syrians are not on the talking points in the latest Obama campaign, but sometimes reality has to intrude, even at the White House.
