This They Cover?

I have seen the bias of the media for years, but I still marvel at it when it comes out full force.  The latest episode is the current Chris Christie story about lane closures on the approaches to the George Washington Bridge.  It is being covered by the media as if it were actually a major national story.  It's not.  Oh, don't get me wrong.  What happened in New Jersey was wrong and it happened on Christie's watch.  But compare it to two other New Jersey stories and the media reaction that they garnered.  1) A year and a half ago, we had the story that New Jersey Democrat senator Menendez was travelling to the Dominican Republic repeatedly on a private jet to visit prostitutes, some of whom were under age 16.  Forget the morality for a moment.  That action was illegal on at least two counts.  Menendez is not allowed to take gifts from anyone without reporting them on his Congressional disclosure forms.  In fact, since Menendez had not disclosed these free trips, he chose to say that he actually intended to pay for them but had forgotten to do so until the story appeared in the press disclosing his conduct.  Menendez then paid out about two thirds of his net worth just to cover the cost of the trips.  So this first illegality was undeniable.  The second part was contested.  Menendez said that he did not visit any underage prostitutes on these trips.  He claimed that the statements by the women in question were lies.  Of course, if the women were telling the truth, Menendez committed a federal crime since it is illegal to travel internationally to visit underage prostitutes.  2) Christie's predecessor as governor, Corzine, is alleged to have funneled over half a million dollars in state funds to a woman with whom he was having an affair.

The media reaction to the Menendez and Corzine stories was non-existent.  Menendez was in the middle of a re-election campaign and no part of the mainstream media covered the story of his illegal conduct.  Corzine also got almost no coverage when his activities were revealed.

Look, I get that Christie unlike Menendez or Corzine is considered a potential presidential candidate.  But what happened with the bridge is far from the alleged criminal acts of other New Jersey pols that were not covered (and who happen to be liberal Democrats).  Indeed, the entire Christie matter would be a footnote if the allegations were that president Obama had done the same thing.  Nevertheless, my local paper (owned by Hearst) actually ran a story this morning under the headline "Is Christie Still Welcome in Connecticut?"  This is a paper that never covered the other New Jersey stories.  This is a paper that never covered the IRS scandal, the Benghazi cover-up, the snooping on the AP and James Rosen, and all the other Obama scandals.

As I said yesterday, I don't like Christie and would not want to see him become president.  Nevertheless, I still find it disgusting that our media remains so biased that we get a firestorm on this Christie matter and so very little on much worse stuff done by Obama and other Democrats.
