Election Day is Close -- Where Do Things Stand

There are still five days until Election Day, so it is possible that things will change.  Lately, big news stories seem to come and go like thunderstorms; they threaten, they arrive with big lights and noise, and then they are quickly gone.  Nevertheless, this year, I'm going to make my own predictions of the outcome across America.  Here is what I expect to happen.

SENATE -- the GOP will increase its majority in the senate.  This will happen with these results in key races:

Texas -- Ted Cruz will beat Beto O'Rourke easily.
Tennessee -- Although this race was seen as close a few months ago, Republican Marsha Blackburn will win easily.
Nevada -- incumbent Republican Dean Heller will be re-elected with a margin of about 5%.
Arizona -- Although the race will be close, GOP candidate Martha McSally will carry the state.
North Dakota -- Democrat Heidi Heitkamp will go down to defeat by double digits.
Missouri -- Republican Josh Hawley will unseat Democrat incumbent Claire McCaskill.
Indiana -- The Republicans will pick up this seat as well.
Florida -- Rick Scott will defeat Democrat Bill Nelson by about 4%.
New Jersey -- the race between Bob Menendez and GOP candidate Bob Hugin will go down to the wire, but Menendez will be re-elected.
Minnesota -- the special election for the seat previously held by Al Franken will be won by the GOP candidate.  This will be part of a major Republican victory in Minnesota that will give the GOP the governor's race.  The GOP will also win the race for Attorney General against Democrat Keith Ellison.

Two races will be close and the Republican may pull them out.  These are Michigan and Ohio.  Right now, the Democrats are ahead, but the GOP candidates are closing fast.

These results give the GOP a pick up of 5-7 senate seats.

One further note is needed to discuss the California race.  It will be surprisingly close, and Dianne Feinstein will be defeated by her opponent in a squeaker.  Since both are Democrats, however, it will not change the partisan make up of the senate.

HOUSE

The Democrats will pick up seats, but they will be unable to win a sufficient number to take control of the House.  The net pick up for the Dems will be in the area of 15 seats.

Governors

Here are the results in a few key elections:

Ohio -- GOP candidate Mike DeWine will win easily.
Illinois -- Democrat Pritzker will take back this seat for the Dems.
Massachusetts -- The GOP will hold this seat easily
Maryland -- The GOP will also hold this seat easily
New York -- Andrew Cuomo will be re-elected, but the margin will be surprisingly close.
California -- Here too there will be a Democrat victory, but a surprisingly close margin.
Connecticut -- Republican Bob Stefanowski will beat perennial loser Ned Lamont.
Florida -- GOP candidate DeSantis will win easily
Texas -- governor Abbott will be re-elected with a huge margin.
