I happened to watch TV on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and I was struck by the ads being aired. These were ads on network stations as well as on cable channels. Some of the ads were aired on the CBS and ABC stations out of New York while others were on cable channels like USA, Fox News, MSNBC and TNT. What was most striking was that there were no New York races for which ads were running, but the New Jersey Senate race and the Connecticut Governor's race had constant advertisements. To be precise, there were a string of ads for Bob Hugin, the Republican candidate to unseat Bob Menendez in New Jersey. There were only a few ads for Menendez. It was like seven Hugin ads for each Menendez ad. Then there were the Connecticut ads. Nearly every one was for Bob Stefanowski, the Republican candidate. In two days, I saw one ad for a CT democrat and that one was for Chris Murphy who is running for senate.
The Hugin ads were pounding Menendez on his being found to have engaged in corruption by the Senate and having escaped prison because there was a hung jury in his criminal trial. More than anything else, however, the ads emphasized that according to the FBI, Menendez went to the Dominican Republic to engage in sex with underage prostitutes. The ads were quite hard hitting.
The CT ads were focused on taxes and economic growth. They pointed out that Lamont wants to raise taxes while Stefanowski wants to cut taxes.
I think it is astounding that we could be in the last days of the campaign and there are all these unanswered attack ads against Menendez and Lamont.
Right now the latest polls show Menendez winning but Lamont losing. It will be really interesting to see how this all turns out.
