The other day, president Obama spoke to a small crowd at a rally in Florida for the Democrat candidate for governor Andrew Gillum. CNN rushed to try to make Obama's speech more important than it actually was. They picked an elderly African American woman from the crowd and asked her if Obama's speaking at the rally made her more likely to vote for Gillum. She thought for a few moments and then she said that she though it would. At that point, the CNN reporter asked the woman her name. It turned out that the woman is the candidate's mother. That's right CNN didn't know that this woman was Andrew Gillum's mother, and she pretended that Obama's presence made her more likely to vote for her own son. It was truly a bizarre moment.
I'm not sure if I'm more surprised that CNN didn't know they were interviewing the candidate's mother or that the mother made it seem as if she needed to be convinced to vote for her own son.
