Obama Achieves a Breakthrough

Yesterday, President Obama spoke of the telephone for an hour and a half with Russian President Medvedev. According to the statement released by the Kremlin, the main topic of conversation was Iran, and here Obama got, what for him, was a breakthrough. The Kremlin reports that "The two presidents, who plan to meet in the US in June, also agreed to work together more actively on the situation in the Middle East, including studying non-standard approaches."

Let's translate that into English. First, nothing will be done with regard to Iran until at least some time after June. (Remeber all last year when Obama gave last December as a deadline after which there would be severe sanctions?) Second, they are going to "study" the sanctions issue. In other words, there will be no action and there has been no agreement. Third, the Russians also mentioned that Medvedev told Obama of his recent visit with the heads of Syria and Turkey, and offered to help mediate here. My guess is that means that Obama will soon agree to interject Russia in between Israel and Syria in exchange for Russia agreeing to consider the sanctions against Iran "very" seriously.

Obama is so naive when it comes to dealing with the Russians. I wonder if he will ever get to the point where he takes a stand and actuallly uses the poweer of the USA to move forward. I doubt it. He will remain the supplicant and keep giving Russia, weak Russia, control. He has to go!
