Last night, Utah Republican senator Bob Bennett lost his bid to be renominated by the GOP for another term in office. The AP announces in its article on the results that Bennnett's loss is due to the "growing national conservative movement". Conservatives in Utah -- what a shock. Next we may hear from AP that there are liberals on the West Side of Manhattan or in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Bennett lost because he was one of the masters at earmarks in Congress and that cost him a lot of support at home. He also lost since he favored a healthcare bill with an individual insurance mandate, a very unpopular choice in Utah. Finally, he was targeted because he voted for bailouts of Wall Street. This last vote is one he probably could have survived, but the combination was just too much. Bennett is the first incumbent senator actually defeated in a bid for re-election in 2010. He most certainly will not be the last.
