In the last 24 hours, we have heard the following about Syria:
1) The killing continues unabated. The Assad regime is still shelling and using tanks to essentially level Homs, a large city. There are no reliable estimates of the number of dead; there are just too many to count.
2) The Iranians are moving to support Assad. While it is less than clear, the word coming from Syria is that Iranian troops have arrived to help the Assad forces. If this is true, it marks a very bad escalation of the crisis.
3) Many Syrian army troops are defecting to the anti-government forces. Some of the defectors have taken tanks and other weapons with them. The protesters do not have anything remotely resembling an army as of now.
4) About 15 countries have removed their ambassadors from Damascus to show their displeasure with the slaughter being carried out by the Assad regime.
There is no good news.
