There is a report out of Syria today that the Assad forces have stockpiled chemical shells and grenades in Homs and have distributed gas masks to government forces in the area. There is no way to verify if this is correct. One thing, however, is certain: if the Syrian government uses chemical weapons on its own people, other countries cannot stand by and watch that happen. It is true that in 1983, when the father of the current president was in power, Syrian forces used chemical weapons to quell a rebellion. At that time, no Western forces could intervene since Syria was a client of the USSR and had the protection of that country. Intervention would have meant nuclear war. Today, that is not the case.
Let's hope the report is wrong and no chemical weapons get used. Otherwise, we really will see all hell break lose.
