President Obama tried to run for cover today after being pounded by religious people, especially Catholics, for forcing coverage in health insurance plans for contraceptives, sterilization and abortion pills. Obama's idea of a compromise is that the Catholic organizations will no longer be required to provide health insurance with contraceptive and abortion pill coverages; instead the insurance companies will be required to provide such insurance. It is hard to imagine that Obama could accomplish this, but he actually made his position worse. Obama demonstrated that he does not care for religious freedom; he only wants to force coverage for contraception and abortion pills with the kind of phony Washington coverup of reality that would let the Catholic Church save face while abandoning its teachings. Does Obama actually see a difference between the Church organizations obtaining insurance for their employees with the requirement that it include contraception and abortion pills on the one hand and these same organizations obtaining insurance for their employees with the requirement that the insurance company that gets hired must include contraception and abortion pills on the other hand? the Church organizations are still paying for insurance that includes contraception and abortion pill services.
Think of it this way: Suppose Obama issued a rule that anyone buying a car from General Motors had to select a dark blue exterior with a black interior. After an uproar from the public, Obama announced that he was rescinding the rule and henceforth people could choose whatever color they wanted. Obama also announced that GM could only manufacture cars with a dark blue exterior and a black interior. It is the same thing!
The real truth is that Obama has just used Obamacare to lose the health insurance of tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of workers. I have no doubt that Catholic hospitals, universities and charities are not going to provide health insurance which violated Catholic teachings. Obama, however, has ruled that this is the only type of insurance that the organizations can provide. The only logical outcome, then, is for the organizations to stop providing health insurance to their employees. In other words, Obama used Obamacare to force huge numbers of people to lose health insurance. I thought Obama said that Obamacare would increase coverage. I guess not. In a contest between a push for abortion rights and insurance coverage, Obama chose abortion rights. Obama chose state interference with religion. Obama certainly chose poorly.

As a Catholic I laugh at every non-catholic that has to report on this story. No one asks why the Catholic church still thinks contraception use is gravely evil. Why only this institution? Well I will tell you if you know your history and your bible you will find out that the Catholic Church has no authority to change God's laws. She just traces what her Founder instructs.
