Rick Santorum released his tax returns for the last four years yesterday. I have now had a chance to review them; they contain little of note. Here are a few of the principal points:
1) Santorum had a hefty income each year in the area of one million dollars. Almost all of what he made was for speaking fees or consulting work. This is not surprising. We haven't had a serious presidential contender in years who was not bringing in the big bucks.
2) Santorum and his wife averaged charitable contributions in the area of 1 to 2% of their income. This is not the crazy low number that someone like Joe Biden disclosed ($200 I think). Nor was it the huge sum that Romney disclosed.
I find it interesting that there was such hoopla about the Romney taxes which showed Mitt and Ann Romney giving close to 20% of their income to charity while the returns of the other candidates only gave rise to yawns. In truth, Romney deserves high praise for his charity.
3) This should be the last candidate tax return to be released during 2012. Thank Heavens!
