I just watched Romney's latest TV ad which is running in Michigan. It is positive, playing up Mitt's roots in the state. This alone makes it noteworthy since Mitt's mantra as of late has been "all negative, all the time".
Not surprisingly, the ad shows Mitt with his father, George Romney who was CEO of American Motors and then governor of Michigan. In one of the unintentionally funny moments of the ad, Mitt recalls going to the Detroit auto show with his dad and the screen flashes three cars from the old days. None of the cars shown, however, came from American Motors whose big product at that time was the Rambler American. I guess Mitt does not recall it too clearly.
Mitt also talks about how the plight of Detroit and Michigan is "personal" for him. Bravo to Romney for finally putting a touch of positive emotion into his message. It does, however, give rise to the question why, if it is so personal, Mitt left Michigan over 40 years ago and never came back.
The truth is that this ad is just the calm before the storm of negativity directed at Rick Santorum which is surely coming in the days ahead.
