It has not taken long for the full force of the mainstream media to be thrown against Rick Santorum. In the last week we have been treated to a made up controversy about a remark made by a big contributor to Santorum's super PAC. We have also heard constant mischaracterization of things Santorum said years ago. Now we are getting minute by minute mischaracterization.
This morning in Ohio, Santorun told a crowd that Obama's agenda is "not about you. It's not about your quality of life. It's not about your jobs. It's about some phony ideal. Some phony theology. Not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology."
So what was Santorum talking about? If you listened to the speech, you would understand that Santorum was speaking about Obama's plans for redistribution of wealth, his plans to raise taxes in a major way on the wealthy who produce the jobs in our society in order to pay for government programs that will give meager amounts to large numbers of poor who cannot get jobs. In other words, Santorum was criticizing Obama for his Marxist views, not Marxist in the sense of the old Soviet Union style Communism, but Marxist nevertheless.
And how does the Associated Press report this story? "Rick Santorum Questions Obama's Christian Values" is the screaming headline. Really? Santorum does not mention Obama's Christian values, but he was questioning them according to the AP? Santorum tells the crowd that he is talking about a redistributionist agenda, but that suddenly is converted to "Obama's Christian Values"? The headline is a complete distortion, indeed, it is tantamount to a lie.
The onslaught from the AP does not stop with the headline, however. It continues throughout the article. The reporter makes sure to repeat the statement made by the Santorum contributor, and then goes on to tell us how Santorum "disavowed" the remark. Of course, Santorum called it a "bad joke", but that was about as far as he went. He hardly disavowed the remark which was, after all, only a statement that 40 to 50 years ago, many people used abstinence for birth control.
Next we get told by the AP about all of Santorum's anti-women positions. My favorite is the breathless repetition by the reporter that Santorum "questioned whether women should be in combat." Oh the horror!! If you ever needed proof that the reporters for the AP are both biased and idiotic, you need look no further than this howler. Under United States policy, women have never been allowed in ground combat. That is not to say that women have never found themselves in such situations, but policy has been to keep combat units all male. There is no candidate for president who questions this policy. That includes Barack Obama who could easily have changed that policy during the last three years had he wanted to. Nevertheless, the AP repeats this statement about Santorum as if it is some terrible misogyny by him.
The sad truth is that this is a hit piece by an unimportant reporter at the AP. His article is slanted and dishonest. When it was reviewed by the editor, neither the mistakes nor the slant was corrected. I wish there was a way to put the AP on ignore.
