Peter Pan and the Lost Boys lived in Never Never Land. Over there, nothing was real. People flew. Pirates were outsmarted by children on a regular basis. And, most important of all, no one ever matured. I was reminded of this lack of maturity when I read today's column in the Daily Beast by Michael Tomasky. He is throwing a temper tantrum in the press because, according to Tomasky, Bob Woodward lied about president Obama and he is getting away with it. The lie, you see, is that Woodward pointed out that (1) it was Obama who had originally proposed the sequester, (2) that Obama had formulated the sequester plan and refused to change it during negotiations with the Republicans in the summer of 2011, (3) that Obama's plan consisted entirely of spending cuts with not even a mention of tax increases, (4) that Obama's recent attempts to blame the GOP for the sequester was changing history (a nice way of saying Obama lied), and finally (5) that Obama's attempt to now add revenue increases (read tax hikes) as part of the sequester was "moving the goal posts" (another nice way of calling out Obama for misbehavior.) In Tomasky's views these are horrible lies and yet because of the process of news reporting, Woodward is getting away with them.
I realize that Tomasky is an extremely left wing writer. That's okay. But as Daniel Patrick Monyhan famously said, he is entitled to his own views, not his own facts. That Obama came up with the idea for the sequester and the White House formulated the contents of the plan has now been expressly admitted by a source that Tomasky probably would believe: namely, the Obama White House. So much for Woodward's "lie" number one. On top of that, all of Washington knows that for the last 18 months, there has not been a peep out of Obama with regard to using tax increase in place of the sequester. Indeed, there is video of Obama telling the country last fall that if anyone attempted to stop the automatic spending cuts of the sequester, he (Obama) would veto the resulting bill. Maybe Tomasky thinks that the video is a clever forgery created by Woodward in order to buttress his later "lie", but that is even too delusional for Tomasky. The plain truth is that Woodward did not lie; Obama, on the other hand, did.......repeatedly.
So here is the message: Earth to Tomasky. Earth to Tomasky. GROW UP!!! FACE REALITY!!!
I know it won't work, but, hey, at least I tried.
