The saga continues. First we heard that Hillary Clinton told a big bucks fund raiser that half of Trump's supporters belonged in "the basket of deplorables". Someone at the event took a video of Hillary and it leaked out. Then we learned that Hillary had been using this line at big fund raisers for many weeks. If you give $100,000 you got to hear Hillary trash millions of people who support Trump as racists, sexists, homophobes, xenophobes, Islamophobes and, shall we say, not such nice people. The other half were characterized by Hillary as "scared and pitiable". It was a line that Hillary obviously liked and used often, so her campaign doubled down on it when the news of what she said first went public. The campaign spokesman announced just this morning that Hillary and the campaign stood behind what she had said.
That was followed by public reaction. The hashtag #BasketOfDeplorables has been trending on Twitter now for a great many hours. When I looked a few moments ago, it was the highest item on the list. So what happened next? The inevitable for someone like Hillary Clinton who has no real convictions aside from doing whatever it takes to get votes. Hillary took back her statement about the Trump voters and apologized. She announced that it had been a mistake to characterize Trump voters as being put in the Basket of Deplorables. She then added this: "Many of Trump's supporters are hard-working Americans who just don't feel like the economy or our political system are working for them."
One thing is certain: Hillary Clinton just lied. It cannot be that her first statement about the basket of deplorables and her second statement about the true nature of Trump supporters are both true. Either she thinks the former or the latter. There's no way that she can believe both. What we are seeing is the real Hillary Clinton, the calculating Hillary Clinton, the Hillary for whom truth doesn't matter, only votes.
If there really is a basket of deplorables, the only one we know for certain is in it is Hillary herself.
