It's a pretty strange moment in a presidential campaign when one candidate actually attacks a big chunk of the voters. Sure the candidates attack each other. They attack the ideas and proposals of the other side. It's rare, however, to attack the voters. In 2012, some people believe that Romney lost the election when that video talking about the 47% who get government benefits surfaced. That wasn't even much of an attack, but it sparked endless comment and outrage. In the last two days, however, the Clinton campaign has begun attacking voters.
First, yesterday Hillary told a group at a fundraiser that half of Trump's voters go into "the basket of deplorables". Not a few people, but HALF of Trump's voters are deplorable. Hillary went on to itemize the reasons for them being deplorable; they are "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic -- you name it." Understand that half of Trump's voters will likely mean over thirty million Americans. Hillary just said that roughly one-quarter of the country's voters are "racist, sexist, homophobic etc." This is coming from a woman whose campaign used racist attacks against Barack Obama in the 2008 South Carolina primary. This is coming from a woman who spent years attacking and discrediting women who were sexually molested by Bill Clinton; she is no supporter of women. This is coming from a woman who opposed gay marriage for decades in public life and only switched sides after it was clear that she would have to do so in order to get the nomination in 2016. Hillary also supported a wall on the southern border at one point; she even voted for funds for construction when she was a senator. And let's not forget the big stuff. This is coming from a woman who never met a lie she didn't like; she's a pathological liar. She's also someone who undermined our national security for her own political purposes. And she sold influence as Secretary of State, another illegal act. So this is coming from someone who would be a charter member of the basket of deplorables. Still, Hillary attacks millions of voters in this way.
Second, Bill Clinton attacked voters in West Virginia, Kentucky, and southwestern Pennsylvania as "coal people" who blame the president for all their problems. He launched a rather nasty attack on those voters who are angry at the actions of Obama and Hillary that are in the process of destroying the coal industry and the economy of their area. Again, it's odd to have a campaign attacking voters. There's no way that Hillary was going to win either West Virginia or Kentucky, but there are plenty of "coal people" in Pennsylvania and Virginia and those are two swing states. It's an insane move to attack sizeable numbers of voters in those two states.
I wonder if this is a sign that Hillary's campaign is melting down as her poll numbers tank. Hillary may be a horrible human being (okay, not "may be" but "is"), but her campaign has been well run until now. These big unforced mistakes are going to haunt her for a long time to come.
