What in the world are Bill and Hillary Clinton doing? It's amazing to watch. The two of them are taking a bad situation regarding Hillary's health and making it so much worse by still trying to cover up the facts. Let's review what has happened.
1. Over the last year, Hillary has on multiple occasions had coughing spells. Last Monday, she had a major one that went on for about four minutes at a rally. Although there were people talking about it on the internet, Hillary and her campaign said it was from allergies.
2. On Friday, apparently, Hillary was diagnosed by her doctor with pneumonia. Hillary kept the news a secret. Hillary was put on antibiotics, but she still went to events on Friday and mixed with all sorts of people. Assuming Hillary started the antibiotics on Friday, she was still highly contagious when she went to those events. Beyond that, she ought to have stayed in bed to recuperate, but that was not done so that news of the diagnosis did not leak out.
3. Yesterday, Hillary went to the 9-11 memorial in downtown New York City. She left early and was rushed off. The campaign put out a statement saying she had gotten "overheated." Of course, it wasn't all that hot in New York yesterday.
4. No one knew where Hillary went when she left the ceremony. It turned out later that she had gone to her daughter's apartment.
5. Then, a video of Hillary leaving made its way to the internet. The whole world got to see Hillary collapse as she was trying to get into the car. She passed out. The "overheated" story wouldn't work anymore.
6. By five o'clock in the afternoon, the Clinton campaign put out the news that Hillary had pneumonia and that she would be taking a few days off the campaign trail. It was an admission that Hillary and her campaign had been lying to the American people since Friday about her health.
That brings us to the new developments. First, Bill Clinton was interviewed by Charlie Rose and told him that this was not a new thing for Hillary. She had passed out "due to dehydration" in the past. Bill was his usual evasive self and was totally unclear about how many time that had happened and when it occurred. So now America was told that Hillary has a health problem that leads to her passing out, but every possible detail about it was omitted.
Not long after Bill's interview, Hillary spoke on the phone to Anderson Cooper on CNN. Cooper asked Hillary how many times she had fainted in the past. That brought on typical Hillary double talk. First she said two times "that she could remember", then a "few" times, and she finished by saying that she really could not recall. I've seen people faint in my lifetime on more than one occasion. It is not something that is easy to forget. I remember each time. You can be sure if I had fainted myself, I would remember when that happened. For Hillary Clinton, however, there is no clear memory, or so she would have us believe. The truth is that what we heard from Hillary is another of those stories that seem to spew out of the Clintons where details are withheld and the truth really is never uttered.
Why would Hillary lie about having fainted in the past? Does this happen often? Must voters worry that in a crisis Hillary, as president, would just pass out? It would be easy if Hillary would just tell the truth. She could easily release her medical records of the various times when she fainted. If it is really only two times (which really seems unlikely), there would not be much to find and release.
I don't know whether Hillary is in good health or not, and that's a problem for her campaign. Hillary and her staff created the problem when they tried to hide the pneumonia diagnosis (assuming that there really is such a diagnosis.) There was no reason to hide it, but their first response to everything seems to be a cover up and lies. Now that they have disclosed the pneumonia diagnosis, Bill and Hillary could be forthcoming so as to try to overcome the damage done by lying about the disease in the first place. Instead, they have opted to try to muddy the waters. We are getting what John Ehrlichman called a "modified limited hangout" during Watergate. In other words, now that Hillary's health problems are coming out, they are trying to keep control of the story by releasing some of the facts while withholding the key damaging parts of the story. Being Clintons, they also tell lies. Think of Hillary's first press conference at the UN on her emails. She went there to put the whole story before the media and the nation. Of course, the problem was that essentially nothing that she said at that time turned out to be true. It did not work then. It certainly won't work with her health issues.
It's times like these when I think that maybe deep down Hillary doesn't really want to be president. Nobody could be this dumb when it comes to handling problems.
