I wrote earlier today about the terrible deal negotiated by the Obama administration with Russia for a "cease fire" in Syria. I put cease fire in quotes because there will still be fighting against ISIS and against the al Nusra front for the foreseeable future. The fighting against the Nusra group will inevitably involve strikes that also hit the Free Syrian Army (America's supposed allies on the ground). The Russians and Iranians get to have Assad stay in power. That's the same Assad whose forces have killed over 300,000 civilians during the war; that's more than 60% of all those who died in Syria, and it's just civilians. That's also the same Assad whose forces are currently using poison gas on civilians. The Russians also get a military alliance with the USA in the future to fight ISIS and al Nusra. America gets nothing but an agreement. In many ways, it's like the Iran deal. America gives, the other side takes, but there's an agreement that Kerry and Obama can tout. They don't care that it's a terrible one-sided agreement.
Anyway, there's new info about the deal. The Washington Post reports that under the terms of the deal the USA has to share its intelligence about what is happening in Syria with the Russians. That sharing was agreed to by Obama despite strong objections from the Pentagon. After all, telling the Russians what we know is a pretty good way to indicate to them HOW we know this stuff. If there are American agents in the Syrian regime, they will likely be outed and executed. The Assad forces will also have a pretty good road map to use against our intelligence networks.
But hey, Kerry and Obama got an agreement! Isn't that great! It's an agreement! We must be on the right side of history!
I've come to believe that Obama named John Kerry as secretary of state after Hillary Clinton because he knew that Kerry would make Clinton look good by comparison.
