On occasion, I read columns by Sally Kohn. Kohn appears on CNN as a "commentator". I put that in quotes, because in Kohn's case it has a special meaning. She thinks that a commentator is actually a propagandist. Today, however, Kohn hit a new low; she's actually out with a piece extolling Hillary Clinton because Hillary has more support among celebrities than Donald Trump. I'm not kidding. According to Kohn, the "cool kids" are voting for Hillary.
Kohn has the right to free speech, so she can say nearly anything. Today, however, we get an unintentionally hilarious column telling us that Katy Perry and Beyoncé are supporting Hillary so she will win. It's hilarious because it is just soooo wrong. Kohn argues that young people in particular will vote for Hillary because of her celebrity support. The reality is quite different. In fact, Hillary is doing worse among young people that president Obama did in 2008 or 2012. Hillary is not running behind Obama by a small margin either. Hillary isn't even beating Trump among young people. Today's LA Times poll has Trump up among 18-34 year olds by 9% (47 to 38). That gives Trump a bigger lead among young voters than he has in that poll overall (7%). Of course, the LA Times uses a different methodology than many other polls, so let's take a look at the last major national poll to be released. The Fox News Poll found that among voters under the age of 35, Hillary gets 37% of the vote. Trump is at 28%, but when Johnson and Stein are added into the mix, the non-Hillary candidates get 54%. The simple truth is that young voters don't like Hillary Clinton. They have no memories of Bill Clinton as president, so Hillary has not nostalgia for the good old days to use to get their votes. She has to win on her own merit. That's why most younger voters don't like her.
The truth is that voters, especially young voters, understand what is at stake in this election. That, more than anything, is why Hillary Clinton cannot win.
