Andrew Brunson

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Andrew Brunson is likely to be released from a Turkish prison tomorrow.  Brunson is the American Christian minister who was arrested by the Erdogan government in Turkey and charged with assisting terrorists.  It's a ridiculous charge; there is no evidence of any wrongdoing by Brunson.  Nevertheless, he has been in prison for two years awaiting trial.  The charges are supposedly going to be dropped as part of a deal negotiated by the Trump administration with Turkey.  It is unclear, but it seems that the USA will withdraw the economic sanctions that were placed on Turkey when it refused to release Brunson in the past.

When Brunson was arrested Obama was president.  As was Obama's custom, he took no interest in the plight of this wrongly-accused American.  It was not until Trump took office that Brunson started to get the attention of the government.

It's great that Brunson is being released.  It's also great to know that the USA has a government that will protect American citizens who get caught in problems abroad.
