I heard CBS News breathlessly report this morning that the New York fizzle bomber may have been working with the Pakistani Taliban. They treated this news as if it were breaking information.
It never ceases to amaze me when the hopes and prejudices of the media overwhelm their reporting of supposed facts. Thus, CBS apparently ignored the persistent reports that Pakistani Taliban was behind the attack. Indeed, according to reports on the day of the attack, there was a video posted in which Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack; since the video was posted before the attack, it seemed likely at the time that it was accurate. Of course, this claim did not fit in with the hopes and dreams of those at CBS who were wishing that the terrorist was somehow a conservative involved with the Tea party. So CBS reported about 150 times on the first day that the person for whom police were looking was a "white male in his 40's". Then CBS broadcast speculation from Mayor Bloomberg and Katie Couric that the bomber was angry about Obamacare. When Faisal Shahzad was arrested, we still heard that he was probably acting alone -- although there seemed no basis for that report. Apparently, CBS based its reporting on the inconvenience of Shahzad having ties to organized terrorism. After all, it undercuts the CBS narrative of the world that terrorism is a minor problem resulting from America's evils (except for the terrible threat of right wing terrorism from the Tea Parties which needs to be stamped out at all costs even though it does not really exist). CBS continued this slant on the news even after Shahzad was reported to have admitted that he was trained at terror camps in Waziristan in Pakistan. So for CBS to now report -- days late -- that Shahzad had links to the Pakistani Taliban, there really must be iron clad evidence that this is the case. Remember in 2004 when it was proven that the documents on which 60 Minutes was relying to smear George W Bush could not be real and had to be fraudulent, CBS still did not acknowledge its mistake. My condolences to CBS News on this latest reports; their harts must be breaking at CBS.
