Interesting news from North Carolina: in the first three days of early voting in NC, a total of 72,173 people have voted. This compares to 35,728 who had voted at the same time in the last midterm in 2006. the biggest group in terms of turnout has been white Republican men. Two years ago, the biggest group was black Democrat women. Voter registration by part has been about equally GOP and Democrat; in 2008, it was three to one in favor of the Democrats.
All of this, of course, means nothing for any individual race. We do not know who any of the early voters selected. It does tend to confirm the polls that show Republican enthusiasm way higher than that of the Democrats. In a state like North Carolina, a surge of voting by Republican voters would sweep away all the Democrats in any close race.
