Richard Cohen writing in the Washington Post says that Obama is like Jimmy Carter -- both men were right but neither got credit for it. As a read the piece, Iwas trying to decide if it was satire or not. Strangely, Cohen was totally serious. He thinks Jimmy Carter was underrated. While I know it seems impossible to think less of Carter's achievements than they deserve, it is, nevertheless, humorous to see a true liberal mind at work. Imagine, here is a president who did nothing right either domestically or in foreign affairs. Oh, he took credit for peace between Egypt and Israel, but the credit for that goes to Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin. What else is there? A stagnant economy? High inflation? Weakening national defense? Installing the Ayatollahs in Iran? I do not know too many folks who consider these things accomplishments.
It is true that Carter is a giant in his own mind. One need only read his latest book to understand the high level of his conceit. Nevertheless, no sane person would ever think of Jimmy Carter and success in the same thought. Carter was an embarrassment to the country, an aberration.
I will give Cohen credit for being correct about one thing: Barack Obama is a lot like Jimmy Carter.
