The trend continues -- the coming avalanche

Another day has passed and more seats have been moved in the overall ranking on Real Clear Politics. This time three seats had their ratings changed. All three moved towards the Republicans and away from the Democrats. The trend is clearest when you look over time. Two months ago, RCP had 202 Republicans ahead and 201 Democrats ahead with 32 toss up races. One month ago, the numbers had shifted to 205 Republicans ahead and 192 Democrats ahead with 38 toss up races. As of today, the count is 212 Republicans and 181 Democrats ahead with 42 toss up races. Of the toss up races, 40 are held by Democrats and two by Republcans. Since the incumbent in a toss up race tends to do worse than the challenger, this is another ominous sign for the Democrats.

It is hard to see anything that could turn this around for the Democrats other than some sort of major non-political event.
