I write frequently about the moronic behavior of the Obama administration which believes that it knows better than anyone else about EVERYTHING. The Obamacrats can pick winners and losers in the field of energy much better than the market. The Obamacrats can resolve the Israeli-Palestinian issue much better than the parties to that dispute. The Obamacrats can run the healthcare industry much better than the doctors, hospitals and insurance companies, not to mention the patients. The Obamacrats can ignore the laws of economics and increase growth by taking anti-growth actions. You get the picture.
Today, there is news, however, of a move by the Obamacrats that is stupid, even for them. The Department of Energy announced a $100,000 prize for development of a mobile app to tell consumers how much energy they are using. The idea is that anyone with a smart phone could check to see whether their energy usage was going up and this would lead to better control of energy usage. It is a nice idea, but it has a major flaw. According to the Daily Caller, there are already about 25 separate mobile apps available on the market that do exactly what the Energy Department wants. In other words, the government is putting up $100,000 to expedite development of something already on the market. In simple language, what this means is that the DOE did not even bother to check whether or not these mobile apps existed before developing a prize program to promote such apps. What's next? Will the DOE announce a prize for someone developing a fuel which can power automobile engines? Oh wait, we already have it and it's called gasoline.
