I used to read the New York Times. I read it all, every day for more than 30 years. When I began, the Times was filled with news and detailed background information about national and international events. Opinions were presented on the editorial page, and the news was unbiased for the most part. By the 1990's, however, all that had clearly changed. The Times was becoming more opinion and less news. Eventually, I just stopped reading; it was just not worth buying the paper to get progressive opinion masquerading as news. I do, however, look at the paper on occasion, and it amazes me how much further towards the "all opinion" mode of reporting the Times has moved.
This morning, I saw the front page which is running an article about how this weekend is holy to both Christians and Jews. It seems hard to imagine that such an article would be biased, but there on the front page of the Times, the bias was clearly evident. It was subtle, but it was there. The Times ran two pictures on the front page to show Christians celebrating Good Friday and Jews celebrating Passover. For the Christians, the Times chose a picture from Spain of people marching in white costumes for the holiday. While the pilgrims in Spain had no connection with the Ku Klux Klan, their white robes with hoods looked exactly like those of the Klan. I am sure that here in America, the number of folks who have seen pictures of the white robes worn by Klan members is a great many multiples of those who are familiar with the garb of Spanish religious pilgrims. In other words, the Times used the picture to compare Christians observing Good Friday with Klansmen. Then, of course, we had the picture that the Times used for Passover. Here the Times used a picture of a Hasidic family with their distinctive dress and hair style that is totally alien to nearly everyone else in the country. The folks were just strange according to the Times' choice of photo, but at least they were not racist murderers like the Christians.
The Times is a disgrace in my opinion. A disgrace!
