Today on Real Clear Politics, there is an article which must be read in order to be informed on the issue of the value of preschool programs. President Obama wants to expand preschool to all American children at a cost of tens of billions of dollars per year. The question, therefore, is will such expansion bring benefits comensurate with the cost. The answer is a simple NO! The authors of this article go through the literature and explain that by first grade (THAT"S FIRST GRADE) there is no measurable difference between the performance of children who attend Head Start preschool and those who do not. Third graders were again checked and there was no difference in performance here either. The simple truth is that preschool does not provide any benefit to the kids. It would be crazy to spend billions of dollars on a program like that.
