Let's Take A Day Off

A friend of mine keeps telling me that my posts are always too glum, so I decided to take a day off from world events to talk about Congressman Steve Cohen, a Tennessee Democrat who either has a bizarre sense of what constitutes good publicity or else has come close to losing his mind.  For those of you who do not know, Congressman Cohen has sent a series of tweets praising Cyndi Lauper, commenting on how "hot" she is and remarking about how great the previous night had been.  Then, almost immediately, Cohen deleted the tweets.  So what happened?  According to Cohen, he was just trying to do something to promote the music scene in Memphis, the city he represents.  Texting and then deleting was a way to get an avalanche of notice in the press.  Clearly, Cohen is correct that most people thought he sent the tweet by accident and immediately deleted it once he realized his mistake.  He did get a lot of press.  But that is far from the whole story.  Indeed, it seems most likely that Cohen actually did tweet to his entire list of followers by accident and that he deleted the tweet once he realized his mistake.  Cohen announced that he had told others in Congress of his plan regarding the tweets, but the two member who he named as being in on the plan do not confirm ever discussing it with Cohen.

But what of Cyndi Lauper? Is she now seeing Cohen?  The answer is a resounding NO according to Lauper.  She says that she met Cohen at some function, but that other than an interaction of a few seconds in a revceiving line, there has never been anything more.  So, assuming Lauper is telling the truth, Cohen seems to be on the verge of losing his connection with reality.

The truth is that just when you think that Congress could not get worse, it does.  I know that may seem glum, so let me just add that I mean it in a comical way.  Maybe the House Democrats will put Cohen in charge of the budget.  Connections to reality are not needed for that.
