The special election for the House in South Carolina and the race for governor in Virgina have seen big developments in the last two weeks that have shaken things up. In South Carolina, former governor Sanford was mounting a comeback after his affair with an Argentine mistress (now his wife) while in the governor's office. It looked like this would be a close election between Sanford and the sister of Steven Colbert who is the Democrat. Then word spread that Sanford has been repeatedly entering the home of his ex wife without permission. The whole thing brought back the sort of creepy and bizarre behavior of Sanford while governor. There are no recent polling results yet, but my guess is that Sanford's campaign just collapsed.
In Virginia, the race was a close on between Ken Cuccinelli the Republican attorney general and Terry McAuliffe the Democrat. Then word leaked out that McAuliffe had been running a "green" energy business that was little more than a mill for obtaining visas for wealthy foreigners. You see, anyone who invests at least half a million dollars in the USA can get a green card quickly. McAuliffe's firm never actually got to the point of being a functioning green energy firm, but it raised enormous sums by having foreigners "invest" in the USA only to get green cards. The funds, however, seem never to have quite made it into plant and equipment. It is an unfolding scandal which will severely tar the formed chair of the DNC McAuliffe. A poll released yesterday shows McAuliffe now with only 27% of the vote among registered voters.
Now of course, there is still time until both elections, so things could change. In all likelihood, however, we will soon see another Democrat in the House from South Carolina and Virginia will elect a Republican governor.
