Fight the Terrorists Please

We are getting a batch of CYA news stories about the Boston bombers that can only be described as infuriating.

The state of Massachusetts has refused to give out any more information about the welfare status of the Tsarnaev family.  When it was disclosed that the brothers had been on welfare, there was an uproar, so the state's answer has been just to stop disclosing the facts.

The FBI announced that Tamarlan Tsarnaev was put on the terror watch list maintained by the agency more than 18 months ago.  That is supposed to show how the FBI was on top of the situation.  Well, it does not.  If Tsarnaev was on the terror watch list then the FBI would have had his picture, name, and other personal details.  Since the photos from the bombing were not identified by the FBI, we know that they did not have the necessary information to identify Tamarlan.  Even worse, maybe the FBI had the information but was so disorganized that it could not use that info.

Look, the question is not if Tsarnaev was on the watch list.  The proper question is how were his activities missed by the FBI and how can a repetition of this failure be prevented.  If the state and federal bureaucrats would put one half as much effort into fighting the terrorists as they do into covering their behinds, we would all be much safer.
