In a very interesting poll of Arizona voters, the view is expressed by a margin of 2 to 1 that in the next election the state would do better if it replaced senator John McCain with someone new. McCain is not up for re-election until 2016, but the poll must be quite disquieting for him and his staff. The best news in the poll is that the 2 to 1 margin favoring someone new is almost exactly the same among liberals, moderates and conservatives.
The truth is that McCain has become a relic. His views no longer seem to match well with those of his state. Even worse, he seems to have lost his edge (to the extent that he ever had one.) It was most noticeable to me during the questioning of Chuck Hagel in connection with his appointment as Secretary of Defense. McCain defended Hagel against questions regarding the identity of those who employed him during the four years prior to the appointment. McCain's position was bizarre, but nevertheless, he protected his old colleague in the senate.
I look forward to there being a new senator from Arizona. Just think, 2017 will bring us both a new senator from Arizona and, even better, a new president. I know things could get worse, but it is hard to imagine how.
