Japan has the third largest economy in the world. It is the most modern country in Asia. It is the closest ally of the United States in the Northwest Pacific. It is very close to North Korea and China. Without a doubt, it is a country which is of critical importance to the United States. So why in the world would president Obama consider appointing Caroline Kennedy as the American ambassador to Japan?
I realize that Caroline Kennedy has a famous name and a famous family. That is not sufficient. If it were, president Obama could name Kim Kardashian as ambassador to France. Despite her name and her family, Caroline Kennedy has not done anything that might qualify her for the position of ambassador, at least not to a country like Japan. If there is an opening in Iceland or Luxembourg, she might be okay, but there are bound to be real problems that arise in Japan. Right now, for example, the USA needs to coordinate its policy towards the nut jobs in North Korea with our Japanese allies. Japan, after all, is within missile range of North Korea. America needs a professional in place there.
Let me add that I have nothing against Caroline Kennedy. But for a country like Japan, we need an experienced person as our ambassador.
