Hard To Imagine

Let's start at the beginning.  Yesterday, three men were observed in Gaza near the border with Israel setting up rockets to be launched in an attack on Israel.  The Israeli forces who saw this happening from their posts on the Israeli side of the border opened fire to stop the missile launch and killed the three terrorists.

Let's stop here for a moment.  What do we have?  Armed forces of a country observe terrorists setting up a missile attack on that country and act to stop them.  That is known as self-defense.  Actually, I should say that the move is self-defense everywhere but in the Middle East.  The Hamas terrorists who run the Gaza Strip denounced the Israeli action as "aggression" against the Palestinian people.  For Hamas, every action by Israel to defend itself is aggression and every terror attack by Palestinians against Israelis is perfectly fine.

Now let's move forward to today's events.  Hamas forces in Gaza launched about 90 missiles into Israel in response to yesterday's "aggression".  Fortunately, no one in Israel was injured since the rockets hit mostly unpopulated areas.  Israel denounced the attack and said it would retaliate against terrorists in the area.  Britain's prime minister David Cameron happened to be on a visit to Jerusalem and he too condemned the attack by the Hamas terrorists.  So far, America which is supposedly mediating peace discussions between Israel and the Palestinians has had nothing to say on the subject.  Israeli tanks have also fired upon terrorist targets in Gaza.

In the last few hours, Israel's prime minister has warned that any further attacks from Gaza will bring swift and severe retaliation by Israel.  Once again, America has stood silent when it ought to be announcing that it supports the right of Israel to defend itself.

Most likely, the next day or so will bring more rocket attacks from Gaza followed by an air assault on Gaza by the Israeli air forces.  If they hold true to form, at that point Kerry and Obama will say something to the effect that the Israeli response is too strong and not proportional.
