Lies on the World Stage

For more than five years, America has had a president who uses lying as a fall back position when he does not like reality.  Just think of some of the lies that make it into Obama's Hall of Fame.  The favorite, of course, is that if you like your plan, you can keep your plan.  Then there are the other Obamacare items like each family will save $2500 in premium costs or if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor.  And how about the nature of the terror attack on our consulate in Benghazi that killed four men including our ambassador to Libya; as Obama had it at first, this was the response to a youtube video (that none of the attackers had even seen).  What about the IRS targeting conservatives and Obama's claims that he knew nothing about it?  Then there is his claim that he was increasing domestic energy production when he actually was doing all he could to reduce it.  That's enough to make the point.

Now something new has been added.  Instead of using the lies for domestic audiences, Obama is now going global.  He is lying to the world, and nearly everyone around the globe will recognize this.  Today in Europe Obama was asked about the criticism from Mitt Romney that Obama had failed to recognize Russia as a major geopolitical opponent of the USA.  In response, Obama actually said that Russia is just a "regional power" that took control of Crimea "out of weakness" not strength.  Now that was a real doozy of a lie.  Imagine!  Russia invaded Crimea and took it from Ukraine as a show of weakness.  A military invasion followed by an annexation of the territory taken is "weak" in this latest revision to reality put forth by Obama.  If this was weakness, I would hate to see a move by the Russians predicated on strength; it could mean the end of the world as we know it.

For Obama to call Russia a regional power cannot make the Poles or the Estonians feel more secure.  What they hear from Obama is a statement that the Russian invasion of Crimea is not a big deal and not something worth concerted action by the world powers.  These countries have watched Putin ignore everything that Obama and secretary Kerry have said and the silly sanctions imposed by Washington.  Putin has brushed America aside like a flea.  Then, the leaders of these countries who are threatened by further Russian expansionism have to listen to Obama explain how Putin is really weak and not strong.  Obama's lies make him look not only confused, but actually delusional.

For what it is worth, Obama today also told the world that Putin's actions were not proper dispute resolution for the 21st century.  To the extent that the lies looked delusional, adding this nonsense clearly makes that perception stronger.  No world leader actually thinks that Putin would care about whether or not his actions were "21st century moves".  Putin is doing what he thinks best for Russia, and I doubt he cares what century Obama or any other person uses in describing them.  Putin is going for territory, resources and people; his goal is not to amass "likes" on Facebook.  Somebody ought to tell that to Obama.
