Do you know who Bruce Braley is? Unless you are a political junkie, the answer is surely negative. Braley is the Democrat who is running for the Iowa senate seat being vacated by fellow Democrat Tom Harkin. Braley is also the Democrat who may have just handed that seat to the Republicans. Braley was speaking at a fund raiser in Texas the other day and said this:
To put this in stark contrast, if you help me win this race, you may have someone with your background, your experience, your voice, someone’s who’s been literally fighting tort reform for 30 years in a visible and public way on the Senate Judiciary Committee, or you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Because if Democrats lose the majority, Chuck Grassley will be the next chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
So now think about this: how wise is it for a candidate for the senate seat in Iowa to insult farmers? How wise is it for a candidate in Iowa to insult long time senator Chuck Grassley who isn't even running for office this time? How wise is it for a senate candidate to brag that he has been fighting tort reform for 30 years? It may get him the support of some trial lawyers, but what about the rest of the people. How many people in Iowa are there who are worried about the prospects of that state's lawyers?
The Republicans have not yet settled on a candidate to oppose Braley. That decision will not come until June. No matter who the Republicans select, however, Braley has just shoot himself in the foot. He may never recover.
