Using Charges of Racism to Silence Debate

The other day I wrote about how Anna Marie Cox had called Paul Ryan a racist for saying that a good job was the best bridge out of poverty.  It was an outlandish statement that seemed so bizarre that it demanded comment.  In the two days since then, the theme that Paul Ryan is a racist has grown larger and larger on the left.  I have now seen at least seven different articles and a fund-raising email from the DNC which say that Ryan is a racist.  Ryan, you see, said that there are men among the urban poor who not only do not have jobs but who also have never learned the value of work.  The commentators and the Democrats now say that "urban poor" is a code word for African American and that "never learned the value of work" is code for "lazy".  They claim that what Ryan actually said was that black people are lazy.  Except he did not.

Personally, I am tired of listening to the endless charges of racism leveled by the professional race-baiters.  These people should (and do) know better.  I do not expect them to change, however, until their tactics stop working.

Since the onslaught, Paul Ryan has said that he was misunderstood and he has somewhat apologized.  It was the completely wrong response.  Ryan should have come forward and taken on the race-baiting haters directly.  He should have pointed out that what he said was accurate and proper.  He should have pointed out that America really does have a problem because it is developing a culture that no longer recognizes the value of work.  He should have said that he will not allow phony charges of racism to shut him up, since the issues he is raising are too important to be avoided just because they threaten the monopoly Democrats have with minority voters.  Racism is still real, but phony charges of racism hurt everyone by minimizing the perception that real racism still exists.

I have to say that I am disappointed with Ryan.  On the other hand, I am repulsed by the race baiters and their allies in the media.  They are truly disgusting.
